IN CONVERSATION WITH AMY FINSILVER, GENERAL MANAGER, XV BEACON

Contributor — Four Hundred by Design

With more than 30 years in hospitality, Amy Finsilver has spent nearly two decades helping shape XV Beacon into one of Boston’s most celebrated independent luxury hotels. As General Manager since 2008, she is known for delivering highly personalized service while preserving the hotel’s historic character. Her hands-on leadership style has fostered a culture centered on empowered employees, meaningful guest connections, and operational excellence. Under her guidance, the hotel has undergone significant renovations and enhancements while maintaining Forbes-level service standards. Her leadership has helped establish XV Beacon as a destination known for exceptional service, loyal guests, and thoughtful innovation.

IF YOU HAD TO DESCRIBE XV BEACON IN JUST FOUR WORDS, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?

Authentic. Alluring. Discreet. Sophisticated.

Every stay at XV Beacon is intentionally personal. We combine the warmth of a boutique hotel with the service standards and amenities of the world's finest luxury properties.

WHAT TRULY SETS XV BEACON APART IN TODAY’S COMPETITIVE LUXURY LANDSCAPE?

Luxury today isn't about having the biggest lobby or the most rooms—it's about creating meaningful experiences. At XV Beacon, we have the advantage of being independently owned, enabling us to develop a unique culture allowing us to personalize every guest's stay in ways larger brands often can't. With just 61 guestrooms, every arrival feels like coming home. From our in-room fireplaces and oversized marble bathrooms to our courtesy cars and thoughtfully curated Boston experiences, everything is designed around the individual guest. Our team takes tremendous pride in anticipating needs before they're ever expressed, creating the kind of genuine hospitality that guests remember long after they've returned home. True luxury isn't about excess—it's about being genuinely known and having ones need to fulfilled without having to ask.

WHY DO YOU THINK GUESTS CONTINUOUSLY RETURN TO XV BEACON?

Our guests return because they feel a genuine connection—not just to the hotel, but to the people who make it special. Many of our team members have been with us for over a decade, some since the day we opened  almost 27 years ago. This allows us to remember returning guests' preferences, favorite rooms, dining habits, milestones,  interests and even the little details that make their stay feel effortless.

Beyond exceptional service, guests appreciate our unique location atop historic Beacon Hill, where they can experience Boston like a local while remaining just steps from the city's most iconic attractions. We often hear that XV Beacon feels less like checking into a hotel and more like returning to a private residence with an incredibly attentive staff.

WHAT ARE THE HIDDEN DESIGN AND ART DETAILS GUESTS SHOULD NOTICE?

XV Beacon is filled with subtle details that tell the story of both the building and Boston itself. Originally built in 1903 as the headquarters of the Boston School Committee, the historic Beaux-Arts architecture has been beautifully preserved while seamlessly blending contemporary luxury.

Guests often overlook the thoughtfully curated contemporary art collection and commission photographs of Boston monuments displayed throughout the hotel, the intricate limestone façade, and the restored architectural elements that celebrate the building's history. Inside the guestrooms, custom furnishings, rich mahogany woodwork, fireplaces, Italian marble and oversized windows create an understated residential elegance that feels timeless rather than trendy.

One detail I'm especially proud of is our commitment to preserving the building's history while continually evolving and elevating the guest experience through thoughtful renovations, and modern amenities.

WHAT MAKES MOOO A DESTINATION IN ITS OWN RIGHT?

Mooo.... restaurant has earned a reputation as one of Boston's premier steakhouse experiences by combining exceptional cuisine with impeccable service and an intimate atmosphere.

Whether guests are celebrating a special occasion, entertaining clients, or simply enjoying a memorable evening, mooo…. delivers consistently outstanding dining. Beyond its renowned prime steaks, succulent seafood and extensive scotch collection and wine program, the restaurant embodies the same philosophy as the hotel—warm, polished hospitality without pretension. Our XV Beacon guests are fortunate to be able to indulge in mooo’s offerings through our 24 hour In Room dining in the privacy of their room.

Many locals visit mooo…. regularly, making it as much a neighborhood favorite as it is a destination for travelers.

WHICH OF BOSTON’S MAJOR EVENT HAPPENINGS IN 2026 WILL GENERATE THE MOST EXCITEMENT?

Boston is entering an incredibly exciting chapter. America 250 celebrations continue to shine a spotlight on the Boston’s pivotal role in our nation's history, while international sporting events are introducing Boston to an entirely new global audience.

We're especially excited about the city's role as a host for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will bring visitors from around the world and showcase Boston's energy, culture, and hospitality on an international stage.  Boston is looking forward to welcoming SAIL BOSTON after almost 10 years in addition to sponsoring one of the majestic Tall Ships.

Looking ahead, Boston's expanding calendar of culinary festivals, cultural exhibitions, concerts, and waterfront celebrations ensures there's always something new for visitors to experience. XV Beacon is uniquely positioned to help guests enjoy these moments through curated itineraries and insider recommendations that go beyond the traditional visitor experience.

WHERE IS THE MOST INSTAGRAM ABLE SHOT ON PROPERTY?

The rooftop inlayed with mosaic tiles rimmed with copper cornice tops is undoubtedly a favorite hidden gem. With sweeping views of Beacon Hill, the Massachusetts State House dome, Charles River and Boston's skyline, it offers a perspective of the city few visitors ever experience.

Inside the hotel, guests also love photographing our lobby’s dramatic 125-year-old brass spiral staircase and wrought iron exposed elevators. Our soaring 2nd floor ceilings with oversized windows and Italian marble bathrooms with the automatic bidet toilets are always a crowd pleaser.  The magnificent masterpieces showcased in our Gilbert Stuart suite will take any art aficionado’s breath away. Our Wine Cellar, housing a 6 million inventory of rare wines, is any oenophiles’ dream shot.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF DURING YOUR TENURE AT THE HOTEL?

I'm proud of many aspects of XV Beacon.  One is the culture we've built and relationships we’ve fostered with our guests and community.  Luxury hospitality begins with people, and I've always believed that if we genuinely care for our team, they'll naturally care for our guests. Many of our associates have been with us for years, creating lasting relationships with returning guests and delivering the kind of intuitive service that can't be scripted. Our canine guest program is close to my heart as they are members of one’s family and we treat them as such with their own “Daw-gone” menu, in-house made PB biscuits and turn down service.

I'm also incredibly proud of how we've continued to evolve the hotel while honoring its legacy—from pioneering thoughtful renovations in our guestrooms and suites to introducing wellness-focused amenities, curated local experiences, and initiatives that celebrate the building's prominent place in Boston's Civil Rights history. Embedding sustainability procedures and participating in philanthropic efforts in hotel operations has become a priority for the team.  Watching XV Beacon remain relevant while staying true to its identity has been tremendously rewarding.  Our building creates the first impression, but our people create lasting memories.

WHAT NEW ENHANCEMENTS CAN WE EXPECT IN 2026 AND BEYOND?

We are continuing to invest thoughtfully in every aspect of the guest experience. Recent enhancements include beautifully refreshed guestrooms and suites featuring elevated furnishings, lighting, flooring, and fixtures that further enhance the residential feel of the hotel. We have also expanded our wellness offerings with infrared sauna, and a sleep-enhancement wellness menu designed to support today's traveler who increasingly prioritizes health and restoration while away from home.

Looking ahead, guests can expect even more curated experiences that connect them with Boston—from exclusive America 250 programming and historical experiences to culinary partnerships and personalized itineraries. Introduced the ability for our guests to dine at our sister restaurants located off-property and bill directly to their rooms. Our philosophy is simple: evolve thoughtfully while preserving the authentic character that has made XV Beacon a favorite among discerning travelers for more than two decades.

Luxury travelers today are not simply looking for a beautiful hotel—they're looking for a sense of place and that's exactly what XV Beacon delivers. I've always believed luxury is measured by how a guest feels when they leave and the memories they take with them and not by the size of a lobby or the thread count of our Frette linens. If our guests leave feeling genuinely cared for and connected to Boston, we've accomplished our goal; creating a deeply personal experiences while celebrating Boston's history and cultivating a culture where our associates and guests feel genuinely valued.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE THE FOUR HUNDRED MEMBER TO KNOW ABOUT XV BEACON?

We curate each and every stay for their clients based on the information they provide about their clients so their time in Boston and at XV Beacon is memorable. Additionally, during shoulder season, November-March, we are happy to issue a complimentary room upgrade at time of booking to the Four Hundred member.
