A BALANCE OF TRADITION AND INNOVATION

In Conversation with Managing Director, Henning Matthiesen, of Brenners Park-Hotel & Spa in Baden-Baden. Once again setting new standards in hospitality, this symbol of refined luxury and well-being has undergone the most extensive modernization in the course of their 150-year history.

Henning Matthiesen was born in northern Germany. He completed his apprenticeship at Hamburg's historic Hotel Prem. A passionate hotelier, Matthiesen worked at renowned hotels such as Claridge’s in London, the Royal Monceau in Paris, and the Adlon Kempinski in Berlin. Matthiesen received his first General Manager position in 2007 at Coombe Abbey Hotel in Warwickshire, England. In 2008, he moved to Prague to open and manage The Augustine Hotel for the Rocco Forte Collection until 2011. He later served as General Manager at the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm and from 2012 to 2019, he was the Managing Director at the Excelsior Hotel Ernst in Cologne. Since January 2020, he has been the Managing Director of Brenners Park-Hotel & Spa in Baden-Baden.

WOULD YOU TAKE US BACK IN TIME AND TELL US ABOUT THE STORIED HISTORY OF BRENNERS PARK-HOTEL & SPA?

Brenners Park-Hotel & Spa has a truly remarkable history that reflects both timeless elegance and deep cultural roots. It was founded in 1872 by Anton Brenner in the picturesque town of Baden-Baden, which was already a renowned spa destination in Europe. From the very beginning, the hotel set new standards in hospitality, welcoming aristocrats, artists, and dignitaries from around the world.

Throughout the decades, Brenners became more than just a hotel—it evolved into a symbol of refined European luxury and well-being. It survived two World Wars, maintained its prestige during times of great political and social change, and remained a place of peace and restoration.

One of the key elements of its legacy is the way it has balanced tradition with innovation. For instance, the Brenners Spa is one of the most innovative Spas in Europe, offering holistic treatments, cutting-edge wellness programs, and medical care with a directly connected medical center, Brenners Medical Care, which has received numerous awards and hosts top-level international medical professionals, all while preserving the charm of its historic setting.

Today, Brenners Park-Hotel & Spa continues to be a sanctuary for those seeking excellence, tranquility, and personal transformation—all nestled within the beauty of the Northern Black Forest, in the fairytale surroundings of a UNESCO World Heritage city.

BRENNERS PARK IN A NEW ERA. CAN YOU TELL US WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING FOR THE LAST 18 MONTHS?

In October 2023, we embarked on the most extensive modernization in our more than 150-year history. Over the past 18 months, this transformation has touched almost every part of the hotel, with a strong focus on preserving the essence of our heritage while embracing sustainability and contemporary comfort. Our main building was completely restored to its original structure. During the process, we uncovered incredible historical details—from 19th-century wooden beams to traditional brickwork—that have been carefully preserved and integrated into the new design. At the same time, we've prioritized sustainable energy solutions, including the installation of photovoltaic systems and the use of locally sourced materials, especially regional timber.

This meticulous work involved hundreds of specialists and craftsmen, all dedicated to reviving the beauty of the hotel while preparing it for the future. Once complete— planned for summer 2025—we’ll unveil 79 newly designed rooms and suites, each with its own character and elegance, combining the charm of the past with the needs of modern travelers.

Even during the renovation, our guests have continued to experience our hospitality in the adjacent villas, where 23 rooms and suites remained open. It’s been a journey of transformation, and we’re incredibly proud to share this new chapter with the world. This summer, this monumental undertaking will be completed.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE DÉCOR OF THE NEW ROOMS AND SUITES?

In total, 79 rooms and suites have been redesigned with 27 unique design concepts, which are timelessly elegant while complemented by modern touches. All the interior fabrics have been carefully hand-selected by Countess Douglas, in keeping with the original and historic design of the building.

Historical elements, such as the traditional staircases, original doors, and distinctive window frames, have been beautifully preserved and the introduction of design and sustainability initiatives seamlessly integrate into the property, creating a space that is as forward-thinking as it is classic. For the first time in the hotel’s history, the original 19th century hidden brickwork on the east side of the main building has been uncovered, offering a rare glimpse into the architectural roots of the storied landmark. Historic wooden beams from the 19th century were retained and reinforced with steel structures to preserve the original architecture, which has been sourced locally from sustainable forestry in the Black Forest.

WHAT IS THE OVERALL SETTING LIKE OF THE RESORT?

The overall setting of Brenners Park-Hotel & Spa is truly unique—it's a peaceful and soul- refreshing haven nestled in the green heart of Baden-Baden, directly on the banks of the Oos River and surrounded by the lush greenery of the private park and the Black Forest beyond. The hotel is embedded in a fairytale environment, adding to its charm and allure.

What makes the resort so special is its combination of natural beauty, historic architecture, and a sense of refined tranquility. You’re just a short stroll from the cultural life of Baden-Baden, including the world-famous Lichtentaler Allee, the Kurhaus, and the Festspielhaus—yet once you step onto the grounds, you’re immersed in calm and elegance.

The urban resort feels more like a private estate than a traditional hotel, with several villas, beautifully landscaped gardens, and a deep connection to nature. It’s a place where time slows down, and where guests can truly relax, recharge, and experience the best of European hospitality.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT AND WHAT IS THE RECOMMENDED LENGTH OF STAY?

Brenners Park-Hotel & Spa is a year-round destination, and each season offers its own special charm. Spring and summer are particularly beautiful, with the hotel’s private park and the surrounding Black Forest in full bloom—perfect for outdoor activities, garden dining, and exploring Baden-Baden’s cultural events. Autumn brings stunning foliage and a cozy, golden atmosphere, while winter has its own magic, especially with the festive Christmas markets and the warmth of our spa.

As for the ideal length of stay, we generally recommend at least three to five nights. This allows guests to truly unwind, take full advantage of our spa and wellness programs, and enjoy the cultural, culinary, and natural experiences the region has to offer. Whether you’re coming for a wellness retreat, a romantic escape, or just a change of pace, a few days at Brenners has a wonderfully restorative effect.
