FALL GETAWAYS WE LOVE: NORTH AMERICA BEYOND NEW ENGLAND

When most people picture quintessential fall destinations in the United States, New England is likely the first place that comes to mind. From the rugged and moody coastlines of Maine to the stunning foliage of Vermont, the region seems hard to beat when it comes to autumn scenery. But beyond New England, there are countless destinations across North America that offer their own unforgettable fall experience - from mountain landscapes and charming small towns to vibrant food and wine experiences. Here are a few of our favorite fall getaways worth exploring beyond the Northeast.
LEELANAU PENINSULA, NORTHERN MICHIGAN
For a classic fall escape with a Great Lakes twist, look no further than Michigan’s Leelanau Peninsula. When fall approaches, the peninsula’s forests burst into vibrant shades of red, orange, and gold, a kaleidoscope of colors that easily rivals New England, while the surrounding Lake Michigan shoreline provides a beautiful backdrop. Fall is also an ideal time to explore the region’s wineries and cideries, scenic country roads, and charming towns like Leland and Glen Arbor. It’s the kind of place where you can spend the morning hiking, the afternoon exploring a small town, and settle in for a relaxed evening by the lake.
ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA
Western North Carolina has one of the longest and most diverse fall color seasons in the world, thanks to the rich biodiversity of the region. Fall is an ideal time to explore the region, when cooler temperatures make it easy to spend the day outdoors and the Blue Ridge Mountains put on their annual months-long display of color. Take a scenic drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway, hike through the surrounding forests, or base yourself in Asheville for a mix of restaurants, galleries, and local breweries. It’s a great option for travelers who want a mountain getaway with plenty to do beyond the typical leaf-peeping itinerary.
JACKSON HOLE, WYOMING
Get the gorgeous views of the Tetons without the overwhelming crowds. Fall in Jackson Hole is a special time, when crisp mountain air, golden aspens, and dramatic peaks create an unforgettable fall atmosphere. It’s an ideal season for scenic drives, hiking, and wildlife watching, and Yellowstone National Park is also within easy reach for a day or two of exploring geysers, hot springs, and wide-open landscapes. With fewer visitors and a slower pace, fall offers a beautiful way to experience Wyoming during its shoulder season. After a day outdoors, head back to the town of Jackson for its wonderful restaurants, galleries, and classic Western charm.
NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA
Fall is harvest season in Napa Valley, making it one of the best times to experience the region. The vineyards take on warm autumn colors as grapes are picked, wineries are in full swing, and the pace of the valley shifts into its busiest and most vibrant season. Pair tastings and vineyard visits with Napa’s restaurants, spas, and scenic drives for a fall getaway that’s more about food, wine, and landscape than traditional foliage. It’s a different take on fall, but one that still delivers plenty of seasonal color and atmosphere.
BANFF, ALBERTA
Fall is a great time to visit Banff, when the summer crowds have thinned and the Canadian Rockies take on an early-season change of their own. The region's famous larch trees turn a striking golden color, the mountain air is crisp, and the lakes and peaks remain spectacular amidst the changing landscape. The surrounding national park offers plenty to explore, from Lake Louise and Moraine Lake to scenic drives in the Rockies. It’s a particularly good season for hiking, exploring the town and enjoying the town's hotels and restaurants before winter kicks into full gear.
QUÉBEC CITY
Québec City is particularly appealing in the fall, when the historic streets are surrounded by changing foliage and the cooler weather makes exploring the city especially enjoyable. Spend a few days wandering Old Québec, taking in its historic architecture and stopping into cafés, restaurants, and local shops along the way. Fall is also a great time to experience the region’s food scene, with local harvests showing up on menus and at markets, or venture to nearby Île d’Orléans for orchards, farms, and wineries. It has the charm of a European city with the convenience of a relatively easy North American getaway.
MEXICO CITY
Mexico City is a great fall escape for travelers looking for something completely different from a traditional autumn foliage trip. The city’s mild temperatures make October and November ideal for exploring its neighborhoods, museums, markets, and restaurants. Fall also brings Día de los Muertos celebrations, when the city takes on a particularly lively atmosphere with marigolds, ofrendas, and events all throughout the city. Add in Mexico City’s exceptional food scene and vibrant design and art culture, and there’s plenty to fill a long weekend.
