Peru is a land of ancient wonders, dramatic landscapes, and vibrant culture. For one traveler, a two-week journey through this diverse country became an unforgettable adventure—filled with thrilling activities, breathtaking nature, and moments of deep connection. In this interview, we explore the trip’s highlights, magical memories, and tips for anyone considering a Peruvian escape.
TELL ME ABOUT YOUR TRIP—WHERE DID YOU GO, WHAT DID YOU DO, AND WHAT DID YOU SEE?
I spent two weeks on an adventure trip around Peru, and every day was packed with something new and exciting. I started by whitewater rafting down the Apurímac River, which was exhilarating and offered a completely different view of Peru’s dramatic landscapes. The rapids were wild, and the river carved through deep canyons, giving us a profound sense of isolation and wonder.
Next, I had the opportunity to participate in service projects in a small town called Ccorca. We worked alongside local community members, helping with small infrastructure improvements and education-related initiatives. It was an incredible way to connect with locals and gain a deeper understanding of life in the rural Andes.
From there, I explored Cusco—a city full of life, history, and culture. As the former capital of the Inca Empire, its blend of Spanish and Incan architecture is stunning. The markets were lively, and I loved trying local dishes like lomo saltado and alpaca stew.
The highlight of my trip was the five-day Salkantay Trail trek. The journey was challenging but incredibly rewarding, with constantly changing landscapes—from lush jungles to snow-capped peaks. It all culminated in a visit to one of the Seven Wonders of the World: Machu Picchu. Seeing it in person was just as magical as you’d imagine—and even more powerful after earning your way there on foot.
WHAT WAS THE MOST MAGICAL MOMENT OF YOUR TRIP?
Hands down, the most magical moment happened on the first night of the Salkantay trek. After a long day of hiking, our group was debriefing and getting ready for the night. We were surrounded by pitch-black mountains and crisp, chilling air. Then someone looked up—and all of us fell silent.
The night sky was unlike anything I’d ever seen. The stars were unbelievably vivid. You could see the entire Milky Way stretching across the sky, the Southern Cross, and dozens—if not hundreds—of shooting stars. It was surreal. That moment, with everyone quietly stargazing in awe, felt deeply special and grounding.
It’s the kind of experience you can’t plan for—but when it happens, it stays with you forever.
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD DO DIFFERENTLY IF YOU WENT BACK?
Yes! Next time, I would definitely go see the Rainbow Mountains. I’ve seen photos and heard stories, but we just didn’t have time to fit it into this trip. They look otherworldly with all their vibrant colors, and I’d love to experience them in person. It gives me the perfect reason to go back!
I’d also love to spend more time in the Sacred Valley, visiting smaller villages and learning more about traditional weaving and farming practices.
WHAT’S ONE ITEM YOU BROUGHT WITH YOU THAT YOU COULDN’T LIVE WITHOUT?
Since I camped for over half the trip, I have to say my travel memory foam pillow was a lifesaver. It might seem like a small thing, but after a long day of hiking, rafting, or exploring, that extra comfort made a huge difference. It helped me sleep so much better in the tent and feel more rested for the next day’s adventures.
A close second would be my water purification tablets. Clean drinking water was essential on the trail, and those tablets made it easy and safe.
WHY WOULD YOU RECOMMEND EXPLORING THIS PART OF THE WORLD?
Honestly, before this trip, I didn’t know much about Peru—but it completely blew me away. I’m a mountain lover, and I was surprised by just how mountainous the country is. It’s not just about the Andes or Machu Picchu; everywhere you go, you're surrounded by vast, untouched landscapes and incredible views.
There’s also so much history that’s been beautifully preserved. You’re walking along ancient paths, seeing ruins, and learning about indigenous cultures that have existed for centuries. It’s both humbling and eye-opening.
Plus, the diversity of experiences you can have is unmatched. In just a couple of weeks, I went from paddling down rivers to hiking through snowfields, exploring colonial cities, and immersing myself in community work. Peru truly offers a little bit of everything for every kind of traveler.
ANY LAST THOUGHTS?
I love Peru. I already want to go back! There’s still so much to see and do—I barely scratched the surface. The people, the landscapes, the food, the history—it’s all incredible. It’s a place that leaves a mark on your heart and keeps calling you back.
Whether you're seeking adventure, cultural immersion, or quiet moments of reflection under the stars, Peru has a way of delivering the unexpected—and making you feel deeply alive in the process.
Molly’s journey through Peru is a reminder of how transformative travel can be. From high-altitude treks and wild rivers to peaceful nights beneath starlit skies, Peru offers more than just sights—it offers experiences that connect you deeply to the earth and to yourself. If you’re looking for a destination that blends adventure, natural beauty, and cultural richness, Peru might just be your next great escape.
